AP News Article Detailing Thousand plus US Soldier Assaults on Resistance Fighters totaling One Hundred in the Now Zad Valley of Helmand Province

In this post we look at an AP News Article dated Friday December 4rth 2009 by Associated Press Writer Alfred de Montesquiou in which the writer describes some details of the latest US led military assault in Afghanistan, the link to the article is listed at the bottom. The assault is labeled “Operation Cobra’s Anger” and the article says the number of occupation forces deployed on this martial assault is in the multiple thousands. The number of occupation soldiers and the degree of sophistication of their armament is in sharp contrast to the number of fighters resisting their occupation.

In the twentieth paragraph of the article de Montesquiou writes “Although only about 100 hardline insurgents are believed to operate in the area” referring to the Now Zad Valley location of this current occupation forces initiative. In contrast, the article states “About 1,000 Marines and 150 Afghan troops were taking part in” this offensive and “while a second, larger Marine force pushed northward from the main Marine base in the town of Now Zad” in the second and third paragraphs respectively. The article further adds in the twelfth paragraph “The offensive began three days after Obama announced that he was sending 30,000 reinforcements to Afghanistan”and in the thirteenth paragraph “America’s European allies will send an estimated 7,000 more troops to Afghanistan next year” with an emphasis of “more to come.”

In reference to the armament disparity between the occupation forces and their resistors, the article lists the occupation forces use of “helicopters and MV-22 Osprey aircraft” and describes the Osprey aircraft as “aircraft that combine features of helicopters and fixed wing aircraft” in the second and third paragraph. The resistance forces are listed as using “roadside bombs, known as improvised explosive devices, and land mines” in the sixth paragraph, which means explosives created with no industrial component, simply put together by hand.

The technical superiority of the occupation forces is further emphasized by this statement in the sixth paragraph “Combat engineers used armored steamrollers and explosives to force a corridor through Taliban minefields” and this one in the eighth paragraph “more than 300 mines and roadside bombs had been located in the first day of the operation.” So even though this meager and outnumber group of one hundred fighters do their best with hand made explosives to deter the overwhelming group of invading military occupiers from their homeland, even these efforts are easily thwarted by the occupation forces technical and industrial superiority.

Moreover, the ineffectiveness of these resistance forces to the occupation assault is stated with these excerpts from the article – “There were no reports of U.S. or Afghan government casualties” in the eighth paragraph and in the ninth paragraph Marine spokesman Maj. William Pelletier is quoted as stating “They’re fighting, but not too effectively.”

This article underscores the reality that the US and other European colonial establishments are spending an overwhelming amount of military force and social resources to attack a feeble amount of resistance to their imperial occupation plans and a non-existent military threat.
